Chosing a Secondary School

Postby Weebly » Tue Sep 22, 2009 5:08 pm

Can anyone offer any hints, tips and advice for choosing a Secondary School for our daughter? I know I have been through this before with my son, but it is all so different now with a girl!!

Your local school is Roade - didn't do me any harm, in fact I had the best years of my life there!

Unless you can afford private, in which case I'd go for NSG in a heartbeat! Not that I'd ever afford it!

NSG isn't actually fee paying - just been looking it up online. The school is Spinney Hill. The High School for Girls in Wooton is the fee paying one - and results there are not all that great considering the cost - so I won't be looking there!

Just been having a fascinating chat with someone who has moved from Roade to another school - fascinating but quite scary!

ah yes I was thinking of the one at Wootton, I looked at NSG as Mr Fox suggested it might be good for Jude eventually, but it struck me a very music based - Jude would want more performing arts eg dance/drama.

my parents bought a house in Roade from MK so that I could go to Roade school, it was by far the best in the area at the time (1990), is it really not any good any more? that was the reason we moved to Hartwell!

I am judging it on results (no comparison between Roade and NSB - but obviously that doesn't help Girls) and on hearsay from paretns of kids who go there now.

Many kids there are absolutely fine and love it, and I am sure mine would be too, but you just don't know!

Others have had problems with bullying, and the main problem is getting any dialogue with the school, at least when my son had a shaky time at the end of his first year at NSB, we were able to chat to and meet his form teacher who was fabulous and even arranged for him to take part in a team/confidence building out of school activity the following term. From what I have heard this type of support is not so forthcoming at Roade.

I have had to communicate with Roade on a few occasions and have had no problem. My advice would be to go straight to the top and contact Mr Parkinson.
Both of my two have been very happy and, when we were concerned about Science and pffered for one of them to move to a "better" school she imploded so we left her where she is - she LOVES it and works very hard. You just have to trust your children to do what you expect them to do.

bassetlady - it's nice to hear something positive about Roade - we moved here with the sole intention of sending our little lady here, and since we've been here we've heard nothing but negatives - so you fill me with confidence (for 4 years time!)

I hear positive and negative about the school - I am sure if my daughter goes there she'dd be absolutely fine. I just want to give her the same choice her brother had!
