Oh yes - I was meant to update our thoughts as we had the meeting last week. We all enjoyed the book, although I personally found the ending a bit odd - like the author wasn't sure how to finish the book and I was waiting for a twist that didn't happen. A good story though, and another with a mix of modern times (well 1970's) and the past with a daughter reading her Mum's memoirs, similar to the last book where a mother read her daughter's diary, but this book was so much more interesting with far more readable characters.

William Boyd - Restless
Not sure if i've missed this months book club meet, but have just finished this today. Throughly enjoyed it, loved the Eva story and this was brilliantly pulled together with the present story. Had a look for some more of his in the library yesterday as this was the first i had read, but everyone else must have had the same idea as there wasn't any there

This months book is Restless by William Boyd - and initial indications are it is much better than last month's book!

The general concensus I believe was the book was boring and depressing, and there are better things we can do with our days than read books like this.

I also missed the last meeting, this was because i hadn't had the chance to even start the book due to other commitments. Unfortunately though i have now given up on it. I haven't been able to get into it, i don't like the style in which it's written nor the characters - in fact it's unusal for me to be so picky but even the character's names annoyed me! I wouldn't normally give up quite so early into the book but i've spent the week avoiding it so deceided to move onto the next one.

You could always start up your own group !

There are 'blokes' in the Roade Library group - usually last Wednesday of the month 1.00 - 2.00 p.m. Obviously not a lot of help unless you are available in the daytime.

A lovely book with a sad theme of apartheid in the deep south of America in the 1930's. The characters of this book were well written and lovely. I thought I might get bored by a 'classic' as I know people who studied this book at school and it put them right off - but I througouhly enjoyed it.
All the members of the book group had the same opinion that this was a great story with larger than life characters and a great glimpse into their lives. We all had different favourite characters who appealed to us. One of the ladies took a while to realise 'Scout' was a girl, and we all thought Boo was a lovely character who watched over the neighbours children but had far too over protective parents - I just had the Boo Radley's song wake up boo going through my head the whole time I was reading about boo!
The next book we will be discussing in April will be The Step Mother's Diary by Fay Weldon, which will be reviewed on Thursday 22nd April - please contact me if you would like to join us. I think we do have one or two copies of the book available to be read.
