WINTER WEATHER – UPDATE – January 6, 2010 – 3.45pm
This afternoon there have been localised snow showers with some additional deposits of snow. Tonight temperatures are likely to drop to minus 9C but the forecast is for it be dry overall with only the risk of isolated showers.
Throughout the day MGWSP, the highways service provider for Northamptonshire County Council, have been treating footpaths and topping up the 1,729 grit bins across the county and will be salting routes from 6pm this evening with snow ploughs fitted. With temperatures likely to drop down as low as minus 9C tonight, the big risk will be freezing conditions on top of snow covered roads.
MGWSP are assessing the situation continuously and may consider an additional salting run starting at midnight. This decision will be made later this evening and will be based on whether or not the heavy frost appears likely.
Tomorrow MGWSP will continue to salt major shopping and pedestrian areas and crews are continuing to travel around the county replenishing salt bins. In addition, if the weather is as forecast then it is hoped to commence treatment on some of the other parts of the network.
The situation is being assessed around the clock and further updates will be made available if decisions change.
A salting decision hotline 01604 883488 can be accessed on.

Again, we urge people to remember that the salt is provided for public footways and salt should not be taken for private use.
.
Oops - we took some of the dregs of the bin at the bottom of school lane to do our path to the front door - I hadn't realised it was for public highways only. The bin was full this morning and was already almost empty by 5pm tonight.

How come the B526 Newport Pagnell Rd wasn't gritted then?

MGWSP, the highways service provider for Northamptonshire County Council, salted priority routes throughout the county from 6pm last night in anticipation of severe frost and temperatures plummeting to -9C.
Snow moved out of the county but crews were out from 3am this morning salting routes in the south of Northamptonshire where the temperatures were at their lowest.
Yesterday 10 crews continued, when not needed for salting duties, to refill bins and salt major pedestrian and shopping areas. This salting of footways and refilling of bins will continue daily and we anticipate that the 1,729 bins will take a week to replenish.
Again, we urge people to remember that the salt is provided for public footways and salt should not be taken for private use.
Today, as the weather is drier and only occasional light snow showers are forecast, crews are able to address the priority 3 routes to ensure those travelling on more minor routes can do so safely and that further routes remain open. These vehicles have been out since 8.30am and will be carrying out ad hoc salting where it is necessary.
