Response to national riots

Chief Inspector Fay Tennet, said: “A total of fourteen people have been arrested overnight for various offences including inciting violence, criminal damages and violent disorder. There are 227 linked incidents and twelve crimes recorded across the county, including an arson attack at a car wash in Wellingborough.

“Ten people were arrested in connection with some minor disorder that began in Abington Park and progressed to Wellingborough Road. These people, in their teens, remain in police custody awaiting interview.

“The group of youths began throwing stones at vehicles and at officers when they arrived.

“No-one was injured, however there was limited damage to a police van – the windscreen was broken, a brick dent in roof of vehicle and also slight damage to the front bumper.

“One male was arrested in Daventry for inciting violence via social media. One further male was arrested in Northampton for the same offence.

“Two people were arrested late yesterday afternoon following criminal damage to properties in Wellingborough Town Centre. The two men, matching witness decryptions were arrested nearby.

“We can confirm that were no riots and no police initiated evacuations across the county, with only small occurrences of minor incidents.

“Shop keepers were not instructed to close-up, although there may have been some retailers who made the decision independently to do this as a precautionary measure.

“Today we plan to continue with high visibility patrol, offering reassurance to the communities and deterring any possible criminal activity.

“We will also be supporting our colleague in the Metropolitan Police by sending resources across.

“We will not be tolerating any lawlessness or opportunistic individuals who think they can use this as a means of behaving criminally and damaging property. We will respond quickly and decisively to incidents and arrest people who behave in this manner.

“Our local safer community teams will be out and about today acting on intelligence we have received from the community as well as visiting parents to highlight concerns or discuss issues.

“We want to stress that there is nothing to confirm any planned incidents in any location or directed towards specific buildings.

“We would like to thank members of the public who have supported our officers with their comments, and would like to reinforce that people disregard rumours and speculation about alleged events.

“Our force website will hold the latest information.

We would urge people to remain calm, conduct daily business and remain vigilant.”

Witnesses to this incident, or anyone with information, should call Northamptonshire Police on 03000 111 222 - alternatively, information can be given anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
